Tier Two Playoffs - Round One

Haya vs Ridha
It wasn't a miracle to witness Haya deluge in full force and completely go Hollywood all over Ikhlas last week. Coach K's troops stomped the Green Machine by a score of 7-3 and wrenched back what was rightfully theirs, the first place title. Now it's showtime and with the backdrop of elimination in the air, only 30 minutes will dictate whether this group is the real deal or fool's gold. Any betting man would take Haya in heartbeat versus Ridha, after all the grey shirts have a platter of offensive assortments. However, this is the playoffs and tier two history has dictated from previous seasons that "whom shall win first place will never win the championships". Is Haya ready to rewrite history? Will Haya be able to beat Yasir Hussain and Ridha?

You gotta give an ovation to Ridha for playing a hearty 30 minutes and skulking by Shukr. Not only did they reserve their seats to the post-season but Ridha cranked Shukr's coffin without Faheem Kotwal and Imran Lakhanpal. Not bad for a night's work! So, let's talk business. The only plausible way the Orangemen can win this elimination game is from the back end. Ridha could elect the dull game plan of going auto-pilot and pouncing on their chances, essentially playing the waiting game. However, Haya is to shrewd for that and will be a handful for them regardless. Netminder Yasir Hussain will be playing the biggest game of his life. Can GM Zaid Mahmood employ a plan that'll elevate this squad to next dimension? How will Ridha shut down Waseem Bangash and Ali Murtaza?

Player To Watch:
It's more like players to watch. Talib Contractor, Shaan Abbasi and Bilal Alvi chewed up most of the playing minutes last game and certainly stepped in some big shoes. Keep those shoes on boys!

Who's Hot?
Mehmed Rizwanovic has crafted quite the repute for himself game after game. The rookie (to i-Slam) has 14 points this season and has been instrumental for Haya.

Zuhd vs Ikhlas
Judging from their resume, the only pragmatic finalist might infact be Zuhd. It's an audacious statement but it's perceivable, unless Ikhlas doesn't reform from their inundating defeat last week. The Purple Platoon recently bid farewell to Yaqeen and left them in a dazing 3-1 loss. Shabil Ahmed and Naeem Akhtar have been the dark horses that have planted this team on cloud nine. Zuhd's defence has been synonymous with their offense and don't look now but goaltender Rizwan Ali is playing tougher than leather on a shoe. GM Fahad Malik has also been a key facet on this team and will look to drive this 18 wheeler right to the finals. However, Zuhd has faced one of their loses to the Green Machine so it'll be interesting to envision both squads doing justice over one another. How many goals will it take to put Ikhlas to sleep? This game is well balanced and will be an exhilarating one!

Ikhlas must swallow this loss and appreciate it happened now, rather than latter. Despite a
few hindrances, the Green Machine have been churning along and have shared quite a ride over their 10 game regular season. GM Amir Multani, Wakaas Khan and Atif Mian have been the pillars to the offence, while Farrukh Khan and his camp of defensemen prove to be the tighter than bark on a tree. The green shirts better buckle up in the back end and prepare for Zuhd cause those speed demons won't give you a second of their time. Nevertheless, we all know the unlimited capacity netminder Khalid Mufti possesses. He's a game stealer and will add more flavour in this veteran goaltending dual. Will Ikhlas and their Khan's go Bollywood all over Zuhd? Can Farrukh Khan shut down Naeem Akhtar?

Player To Watch:
He's fast, he's bullheaded and he always finishes his assignments with tenacity. Hi name is Sajid Khan.

Who's Hot?
This is all about the Naeem Akhtar show. The stats speak for themselves.

Tier Two Previews - Week Thirteen - December 12th

Ikhlas vs Haya
The Green Machine was up to their butt kicking antics as they pulverized Shukr to a 4-1 score. The victory crawls Ikhlas within sniffing distance of clinching first place, but that's all contingent on how the Zuhd-Yaqeen results transpire come game day. Ikhlas has gradually sculpted into a contending team headed into the playoffs, hence this battle versus Haya will be a perfect litmus test to evaluate Ikhlas's season long progress. Despite a few hiccups, Khalid Mufti continues to show confidence in net and that's allowed the Green Machine's defensive core to craft "artistic" transitional plays. Will Ikhlas be able to avenge their previous loss to Haya?

Coach K's team has religiously churned out points night after night and continue to rule the tier two roost. It was a close call with Zuhd, but the persistence of Aazar Zafar ultimately paid off as the stud forward actuated his team from a déjàvu loss by the hands of the purple shirts. In their last three games Haya has earned ties and that's raised an eyebrow amongst the critics. Lack of finishing is one reason, but Haya's habit of trailing till the final minutes is a issue that needs attention. Gone are the days where the grey shirts would make a mockery out of each team they played, cause now they've slowly been exposed. Can Haya rectify things before the playoffs start?

Player To Watch:
Ikhlas's unsung hero is Atif Mian. The frisky forward has been a solid patron to the Green Machine's offensive cohort.

Who's Hot?
Aazar Zafar pulled all the rabbits out of the hat and saved his team's fate by bubbling up a two goal performance.

Ridha vs Shukr
It was a loss for Ridha to forget and Yaqeen and Shukr to cherish. The Orangemen could've seal the deal but consequently succumbed to a painstaking 2-1 loss. Let's sidetrack the Yaqeen result and focus on this week. Who the heck would've thought that fate has radiated so much value in the final regular season game for both camps. Both teams have their advantages and while I won't side with any of these squads I'll sum it up. Goaltending wins games, and if you have a keeper that can steal games than you're chances of winning are gleamming. Ridha has a point to prove and will exploit Talib Contractor and Farooq Sani to the last drop. GM Zaid Mahmood will have to calm the nerves of his squad and focus on the bigger picture. Yasir Hussain can play under pressure and I can attest to that, but does he have the defence that can bail him out? Will Ridha be able to out muscle Shukr? The Orangemen have had difficulty getting goals so it's time for Imran Lakhanpal and Amad Khan to step it if they wanna see the other side of the rainbow.

When Yaqeen beat Ridha, GM Ahmad Ibrahim was grinning like the Cheshire cat from Alice in wonderland and man he couldn't stop. I can imagine the emotional roller coaster that Shukr was enduring behind the glass, but now it's game time. Shukr is looking to earn their second win of the season and they'll need everyone's synergy. Climbing that mountain won't be easy when your goal scoring is yearning for some variety but most importantly consistency. Sure there's a lot of hustlers on the Blue Battalion that don't know the meaning of stop but how many of them are intuitive enough to get the job done? The same question applies to Ridha. Netminder Sadiq Rehman's goaltending has been a head scratcher. Sometimes he's awesome and busier than the 401 on a Friday night but sometime you wonder if you should just jump in net. Regardless, if Shukr wants to tango with the big boys then only a win will suffice. I can't explain how monumental the first goal will be in this game. Can Shukr out hustle Ridha? Good luck to both teams!

Player To Watch:
This will be a goaltending campaign for both teams. Let's see what kind of a show can Yasir Hussain and Sadiq Rehman craft out?

Who's Hot
Neither team has ignited anything last game. At the end of this game, one team will be hot.

Yaqeen vs Zuhd
The Winter Warriors had no business beating Ridha last week, but what could I say, we just couldn't resist. Wearing the spoiler mask, Yaqeen came in full force and had a helping hand as stalwart Abdul Aziz Rasoul and the diligent Furhan Azmat returned to the lineup. While Yaqeen handed the arduous loss to Ridha, cheers from the Shukr team can be heard in the backdrop. Since this game versus Zuhd is merely formalities in concluding the season, expect the Winter Warriors to utilize this winning momentum and refraining Zuhd from evening thinking of clinching first place. Can Kamran Siddiqui and Imdad Ali stump Zuhd's hellbent runners?

Zuhd is a mean team. Not only do they give their opponents hissy fits, their tenacity is the primary reason to their achievements. The purple shirts almost clipped Haya's wings for a second time but swivelled off the winning road and settled for a 3-3 draw. While Naeem Akhtar has soared up the leaderboard, GM Fahad Malik has revived his scoring touch and added some flavour to the assortment of point getters amidst this squad. Zuhd has been paramount upfront and their defense has been tighter than old Mother Hubbard's cupboard. Goaltender Rizwan Ali probably isn't used to this luxury defence and hasn't been occupied as previous seasons. Can Yaqeen keep Rizwan Ali on his heels? Or will Zuhd walk all over Yaqeen again?

Player To Watch:
Goaltender Saboor Mian played his heart out last game and it's anticipated he'll hit the repeat button versus Zuhd.

Who's Hot?
Naeem Akhtar looks to build on his points and might take the scoring race crown, unless Yaqeen has better plans.

Wednesday 3 December 2014

Tier Two Previews - Week Twelve - December 5th

Ikhlas vs Shukr
Ikhlas cashes out another week of success at the the expense of Yaqeen's lapses. The Green Machine displayed no mercy scoring three short handed goals and clipping Yaqeen's playoff chances. GM Amir Multani and Atif Mian have been nothing but big bucks for Ikhlas, while Wajahat Khan and Farrukh Khan close the lanes to goaltender Khalid Mufti. Can the green shirts hit the repeat button on Shukr? The Blue Battalions have their backs to walks and are desperate to earn any feasible points.

The hamster is slowly falling off the wheel for Shukr. Team blue has gradually coasted down the standings and now crave to get back to the scenic side of the fence. Besides Sadiq Rehman, this team needs to put the afterburners on. It's transparent that Rehman was the only person who wanted to make a game out what ensued in Shukr's last stint. Offence is another issue with the blue shirts, cause right now that buck stops at Nadeem Qureshi and Mohamad Hamoud. Can Shukr surprise Ikhlas and snap their 3 game unbeaten streak?

Player To Watch:
The fate of Shukr will be heavily shouldered on Mohamad Hamoud. Can the lanky giant get his team back into the playoff picture?

Who's Hot?
Atif Mian churned out a hearty 3 points last week.

Ridha vs Yaqeen
Forget about orange juice, it was more like grape juice being served last Friday night as Ridha upset Zuhd in a shifty 4-2 decision. The Orangemen had a pleasant surprise when Zuhd took the opening face off minus Rizwan Ali and were all over that yawning net like a fat kid on a twinkie. This final playoff push for Ridha couldn't have been more critical as another nemesis by the name of Yaqeen awaits. For Yaqeen, it's just about working up a sweat while keeping it respectable. However, Ridha has a different mindset and will give the Winter Warriors a good run for their money.

Yaqeen is officially out of playoff contention. Despite sipping a few leads against Ikhlas, Yaqeen royally choked and got lashed in a 6-2 decision. What appeared to be the best roster on paper has management wondering; what went wrong? Yaqeen will now look to play spoilers against Ridha and anticipate avenging their previous 4-2 loss against the orange shirts. Revenge would be sweet, but to beat Ridha during their urgency would be even sweeter. Can Saboor Mian steal the show versus orange?

Player To Watch:
GM Abbas Amarshi has been tough on the blue line and will give Ridha forwards a nasty greeting.

Who's Hot?
Bilal Alvi was one of the prime factors in Ridha's upset win. The young lad picked up a goal and an assist.

Zuhd vs Haya
Zuhd got shell shocked after losing to Ridha and will shake the loss off like a bad nightmare. The high octane team faces the Misty Marauders and anticipate snatching first place from under Haya's noses. The previous match between the two had a total of 13 goals and was see-saw affair of offensive power houses. This Friday will also feature two gentlemen battling for the scoring title; Naeem Akhtar and Waseem Bangash. GM Fahad Malik was on a roll last week and pumped out two goals for his squad. Does Zuhd have the booksmarts to overthrow Haya? Can Rizwan Ali shutdown Coach K's posse?

Haya is coming off a tough 1-1 draw from a few weeks back and is perhaps having nightmares of Shukr's keeper, Sadiq Rehman. Yes, the diminutive goaltender left Haya dazed as he retracted a whooping 20 shots. This week, the grey shirts have a mission and that's asserting first place. A win over Zuhd not only plays vengeance but embodies much value to the confidence of Haya, now that the playoff aura seeps in. Can Mehmed Rizwanovic and Ali Murtaza lead the charge against the Purple Platoons?

Player To Watch:
Aazar Zafar has been a crucial pillar to Haya's identity. Fluent in defence and offends, expect Aazar to get the job done this week.

Who's Hot?
As mentioned, GM Fahad Malik seems like he reclaimed his offensive prowess with those 2 goals from last week.

Wednesday 26 November 2014

Tier Two Previews - Week Eleven - November 28th

Yaqeen vs Ikhlas
The flicker of hope is slowly disintegrating for Yaqeen. Short benches, injured players have been the primary reasons to the squad's frail performances. After saturating some motivational words, it was expected that the Winter Warriors might've been able to turn a new flake, but instead struggled with Zuhd's offensive blizzard and got thrashed by a 5-0 score. Sigh, the situation for Yaqeen is so severe that they can't afford to drop any games going forward. It's the same story for the white shirts and I know I've mentioned this before but someone has to carve the winning path for Yaqeen. Who'll rise to the occasion in driving this 18 wheeler in the right direction?

Ikhlas is unbeaten in their last two games and pummelled Ridha last week in a 4-0 drubbing. The victory books this team's tickets into the post season, but then again there weren't any qualms that this squad would choke getting there. Up this week for the Green Machine is hungry Yaqeen. The last time these two played, Yaqeen's last minute debacle played in Ikhlas's favour as the green shirts popped 3 goals in the final minute of the game. Ikhlas is rolling right now and will eat off the momentum from the Ridha win. Up front, GM Amir Multani was solid last game but must remain consistent; but what about Zuhair Fancy? If you missed it, let's just say it was like Bobby Orr but without the soar. Can Ikhlas silence Yaqeen's noisemakers?

Player To Watch:
First round pick Taqi Ahmed will have to start playing like a first rounder. Known for his swift hands, expect Taqi to raise havoc on Ikhlas territory.

Who's Hot?
GM Amir Multani was on a tear and collected a 3 point night.

Ridha vs Zuhd
Ridha is another team hunting for the final playoff spot and is in desperate needs of points. With three games remaining in their schedule, they probably have the best scenario of sealing the deal. However, in order to do that their offence has to click and their defence and has to fulfill their roles. GM Zaid Mahmood's tribe played a frustrating game last week, but the kicker here is that Ikhlas had the shorter bench. Regardless, the Orangemen can't soften up in their own zone or else they or else they will get "freshly squeezed" by the end of the night. Who's up for some orange juice?

Man, what do you say about a team that is simply rocking! If you missed the Naeem Akhtar show than fear not cause Naeem's stalwart performance has been a Friday night ritual. Last week Zuhd thrashed Yaqeen 5-0, and ultimately planted a bollard in Yaqeen's playoff aspirations. Additionally, Faisal Mehboob and Shabil Ahmed prove that their offensive support has paid off dividends for the Purple Platoons. Next on their hit list is Ridha. Though the purple shirts beat them in their previous encounter, expect goaltender Yasir Hussain to challenge GM Fahad Malik and company all night. Conversely, netminder Rizwan Ali will assign himself as the pivotal point in escalating his team to first place.

Player To Watch:
Imran Lakhanpal will need to step and get this team going. Lakhanpal will look to own Rizwan Ali with that patented slapshot.

Who's Hot?
Naeem Akhtar continues to fester the opposition and did so with Yaqeen last week. Have a gander at his points!

Wednesday 19 November 2014

Tier Two Previews - Week Ten - November 21st

Yaqeen vs Zuhd
Oh boy! Talk about getting into a sticky situation. Yaqeen's recent loss to Ridha puts them in a bad spot, and now the urgency calls for them to essentially win every remaining game on the schedule. Let the fire sale begin! Expect GM Abbas Amarshi's daytime minutes to hit the roof this week as the sirens for transactions has sounded. How will Yaqeen reply to this surging Zuhd team? Time is running out for the Winter Warriors, this is pretty much their last crack at being qualifying candidates for the final playoff spot. With Shukr flying away and Ridha slowly drifting off, they are all alone in the pit of the standings.

GM Fahad Malik's squad has been airborne as of late and haven't shown any symptoms of landing since that explosive game with Haya. As a matter of fact, it just seems like this plane is on a prolonged autopilot. Can Yaqeen knock these guys of course? Zuhd's dominance has been their defense, and with stalwarts like Amir Baig and Farhan Siddiqui assisting in the back, it isn't a surprise netminder Rizwan Ali hasn't been that busy of a goalie. Naeem Akhtar continues to be the guy yelling on top of the mountain here, while Faisal Mehboob proves that size doesn't matter when it come to tallying points.

Player To Watch:
Qamar Mian has been an impeccable force in the back end for Yaqeen and segways stability.

Who's Hot?
Shabil Ahmed has slowly moulded into a critical piece to Zuhd's success.

Haya vs Shukr
Haya might've skipped a heartbeat last week when they faced off against Shukr. A second defeat was churning, but Arif Khan responded with 11 seconds left and maintained the grey shirt's unbeaten streak. Despite the absence of Coach K, Haya's gritty squad fought tooth-to-tooth and left the arena floor with 1 point in hand; that's why their at the plateau of the standings. Digging deep and playing the coach's strategy has been a ritual for Haya, toss in the fact that this team is deeper than Lake Ontario and you got a solid contender for the finals. Question is if they can subdue a playoff hungry Shukr team and retrieve that point back that Shukr stole from them?

Shukr had an interesting tilt with Ikhlas last week where the salivation eventually nudged them another inch up the standings. Itching to solidify their identity, the Blue Battalions look to seal the deal when they face Haya this week. Goaltender Sadiq Rehman played like a possessed man and retracted a whopping 22 shots where Shukr unfortunately only loaded a mere 16 shots. Shukr's defence still exhibits some frailty, but luckily their team speed compensates them in the back end, at times that is. Saqib Khokhar and Mohammed Hamoud continue to lead their squad in goal scoring and would probably envision other players to step up to the plate. Can the blue shirts win and creep closer to concreting that final playoff spot?

Player To Watch:
Arif Khan has been a valuable donor to Haya's offensive production. Most noticeably was Arif's heroics in last game's final minute goal.

Who's Hot?
Last game Sadiq Rehman stood on his head and made some crucial saves.

Ikhlas vs Ridha
Ikhlas played a power packed game last week and tried blowing up Shukr, but luckily Sadiq Rehman's firm efforts stole a point from the Green Machine. Atif Mian was the lone offender and scored a beauty of a goal that perhaps all of Cambridge heard. Jokes aside, this week's tilt with Ridha will be very trying. This match is being dubbed as the "Battle of the Goalies". Yes sir, the two best tier two goalies will be on display but the question is who'll take home the bragging rights? Ikhlas has proven that they have plenty of jump but at times have been a bit dreamy in their own defensive end. Let's hope the green shirts can crack their three game winless streak.

There were plenty of smiles in Ridha's change room last week. The Orangemen had some frightening moments in their own zone but cranked out a solid 4-2 victory over the tier two rag dolls, Yaqeen. The Talib Contractor show went live and didn't disappoint; but is this where things escalate for Ridha? Will they be able to press the repeat button versus Ikhlas? The win helps the Orangemen keep pace with Shukr but need every imaginable point henceforth. Faheem Kotwal and Farooq Sani were studs on defence last game and they'll need tot bring that same momentum int the changeroom this week. Can Ridha take a step closer to that final playoff spot?

Player To Watch:
Both goalies will be the focal points in this main attraction...who'll succeed?

Who's Hot?
Talib Contractor and Yasir Hussain stole the show last game. Yasir with his mind boggling saves and Talib for his two goal night.

Wednesday 12 November 2014

Tier Two Previews - Week Nine - November 14th

Yaqeen vs Ridha
There really aren't anymore excuses left now. Yaqeen has been through multiple peaks and valleys and have been beaten black and blue for the past few weeks. Last game was a prime example of getting into penalty troubles and generously gifting the opposition 2 points. However, it doesn't mean that things aren't improving in the Yaqeen camp. There have some soothing visuals and promising efforts from the white shirts. Let's just hope there aren't hallucinating a win this week and eventually go for the real deal. Saboor Mian has to be top notch henceforward if the white shirts want a celebrating cause.

While Yaqeen comes out gung-ho in longings for a win, Ridha gets a cortisone shot of Talib Contractor and has to forsee this game as a playoff game, it's as simple as that. Can Contractor solely alter the ambience of this match? Ridha biggest bane has been their offence. Certain individuals were envisioned to light it up, but consequently the squad has been left in the dark. GM Zaid Mahmood will need to pump up his squad as an equally salivating Yaqeen will show no mercy. Imran Lakhanpal and Amad Khan have been the lone donors to offence, so there's certainly room for individuals to step it up. Can Ridha's offence get the spark they need?

Player To Watch:
Farooq Sani has been a force on defence and known for quickness. Will he be able to shutdown Yaqeen?

Who's Hot?
No one! Both teams are ice cold and definitely need a win.

Burning Questions?
There was a lot of buzz regarding Yaqoob Jamal on draft day. Is this guy for a real or just an ornament?

Ikhlas  vs Shukr
What's going on with Ikhlas? Just when we witnessed them torpedoing upwards, the green shirts have started to slither away. They've lost their last two games and despite pouring their guts out, they've appeared to stutter globally. Up this week is Shukr, and these guy are coming in hungrier than a homeless person on Thanksgiving. GM Amir Multani needs to get a grip on his squad before it's too late. The sirens haven't gone off yet, but a loss for green would definitely make things detrimental. Will the Green Machine be able to rebound? Buckle up, this might be a heck of a ride for one team.

It was like snatching a toy from a kid. Well, at least that's what it might've felt like for Shukr who compromised to a 4-4 tie with mere seconds remaining in the game versus Haya. Disheartening, but all you can do is accept it and move on. Regardless, things are looking encouraging for the Blue Battalion, and immediately Nadeem Qureshi's presence makes a huge impact. A few new faces emerged from the trenches and finally got on the board for the blue shirts. The question is if Shukr can handle Ikhlas's speed, not to mention seasoned netminder Khalid Mufti? Has Shukr moulded into a contender?

Player To Watch:
Known for crashing the net mercilessly, GM Ahmed Ibrahim notched his first of the season. Is there more where that came from? Will Shukr's theme be Ahmed Ibrahim?

Who's Hot?
Wakaas Khan has steadily garnered points throughout the season, and most recently pocketing 2 points in their last tilt.

Burning Questions?
Can Ikhlas come of their winning drought?

Wednesday 5 November 2014

Tier Two Previews - Week Eight - November 7th

Ikhlas vs Zuhd
The Green Machine are digesting their first loss at the hands of Haya and try to saturate all the issues leading to the defeat. Haya overshadowed Ikhlas and controlled the pace of the game right to the last drop. Although the green shirts are probably cozy in the standings, they must grasp more points and distance themselves from the basement of the standings, before it gets pressing. Besides GM Amir Multani and Sajid Khan, Azim Siddique has been the offensive dark horse and has clearly evolved his game. Will Farrukh Khan and Wajahat Khan be able to reply to Zuhd's speedy offence?

Zuhd has been soaring high altitudes as of late and remain unbeaten in their last four games. Despite a vigorous second period push, the Purple Platoons blew it up and furnished Ridha with their 4th loss. Now that the movers and shakers have been classified on purple, vengeance will be the focal point for Zuhd this week. Faisal Mehboob, Abdu Sharkawy and Huzaifa Manjara have been solid contributors offensively while Rizwan Ali has broadcasted much poise between the pipes. Has Zuhd matured into a firm contender? Can the purple shirts remain in second place, again?

Player To Watch:
Goaltender Khalid Mufti will need to steal this game. Zuhd comes in with some high aspirations and confidence, can Mufti sour the purple shirt's weekend?

Who's Hot?
You can't blink twice about this but maybe it's time Abdu Sharkawy might've ignited something. Two pivotal goals in his last game! Is this the start to the Sharkawy we knowi.

Burning Questions?
Will Ikhlas be able to take their second place cushion back from Zuhd?

Shukr vs Haya
Remember that thoroughbred that was once on steroids and mauled Yaqeen about a month ago. Well, now that horse has been playing like a sick mule waiting to be put down. Shukr has lost their last two games and need to refocus on the future. With Ridha and Yaqeen in the rear view mirror, the playoff race has geared up. GM Ahmed Ibrahim has been proactive and has reeled in defenseman Nadeem Qureshi to his camp. Shukr's loss of speed will hurt, but can a defensive stud like Qureshi be the antidote to a playoff hungry team? Offensive prowess lacks on this team cause mainly Mohammad Hamoud has been the lone point getter. Shukr needs some scorers, who's in?

What can ya say about Haya? Their all over the map and last week was a gift to them. Yaqeen blundered in every department and basically direct deposited two points over to Coack K & Company. The Misty Marauders plastered Yaqeen in a 5-0 spanking and have ultimately segregated themselves from the remnants of the league. Up next, Shukr. A team that's vying in collecting any imaginable points, yet hurting globally. How will Shukr treat Haya's offensive platter? Ali Murtaza and Arif Khan have been merciless to their opponents and are emblems for the grey shirts. Can Haya craft up another victory?

Player To Watch:
With the dismissal Talib Contractor, Saqib Khokhar will savour the limelight and lead the Blue Crew in the offensive charges.

Who's Hot?
Let's take two. Wesam Issawi and Belal Ahmed both played hard and demonstrated their importance to their squad via the scoresheet.

Burning Questions?
Will a player like Nadeem Qureshi be able to help Shukr realigning their path to the post season?

Wednesday 29 October 2014

Tier Two Previews - Week Seven - October 31st

Zuhd vs Ridha
Zuhd storms into this match versus Ridha with a plethora of offensive expectations. Despite chasing the score last game, the purple shirts dug deep and showed more hunger than a bear who just woke up in the spring. The Purple Platoons overcame first place Haya in a 7-6 squeaker and now travel to encounter a playoff starving Ridha squad. Naeem Akhtar continues to be the cornerstone for Zuhd; however, there's so much more to offer from purple that these guys seem to deliver day in and day out. Many of their players have points! While frail defense lingers around Zuhd's squad, the purple shirts will have their hands full as Ridha starts to feel more accustomed with each other. Can GM Fahad Malik's team maintain their unbeaten streak and can leapfrog Ikhlas in the standings with a win?

The Orangemen are still licking their chops off a high octane win over Shukr and anticipate to clean house once again. Ridha did manage to steal a win last game, but their defensive woes continue. At times it looked like a fire drill in the back end and a simple clearing of the ball became a struggle for orange. Ridha was outshot 17-8 and netminder Yasir Hussain continues to prove he's the reason why Ridha's still to breathing today. GM Zaid Mahmood will need his backend to tidy up versus Zuhd cause this ride might be full of turbulences. Amad Khan and Imran Lakhanpal will need to pave the way to another victory while Nadeem Qureshi and Faheem Kotwal tighten the gaps in the defensive end. Can the Orange shirts spit out another win? I haven't seen Farooq Sani and Abdul Wahab Mohammad anywhere on the stats yet; have you?

Player To Watch:
Amad Khan seems to be the man with the hot hands on Ridha. Known for determination, Khan has always been able to rise to the occasion.

Who's Hot?
Who say size matters? The pesky Faisal Mehboob carved a feast out of Yusuf Kapoor and was clearly in the driver's seat for Zuhd.

Burning Questions?
A convincing win is what Ridha needs. Can they be able to tolerate Zuhd's wrath?

Haya vs Yaqeen
Two teams on the opposite end of the food chain fight for another two points. While Coach K's gang has adapted in surviving every feat; how will they be able to soothe Yaqeen's recent confidence boost? Haya's method of suppressing a beast like Ikhlas really shouts attention since grey nurtured team green 4-2. Waseem Bangash, Mehmed Rizwanovic and many others are leading the way for the Misty Marauders in capturing first place. While many say that there's a fine disunion in talent compared to the rivals, it's still anyone's game, anyone's season as a matter of fact. True Haya has many priceless gems that are getting the job done, but their main logic has been by abiding to their coach's plan. The last time Yaqeen squared off against against grey, Haya drubbed the snowbirds in a 6-3 rampage. Will the grey shirts be able to hand Yaqeen another loss?

Although they were the last team to taste victory, the Winter Warriors managed to get the job done by beating Shukr in a 3-1 win. GM Abbas Amarshi's squad couldn't have asked for anything more as the timely victory gives Yaqeen a window of promise in entering playoff land. Despite orchestrating a well buckled game, Furhan Azmat and Taqi Ahmed took matters into their own hand in getting Yaqeen a hard earned win. The white shirts must revolve around this snowballed confidence and play Haya to the tooth. Goaltender Saboor Mian seems to have discovered his groove and demonstrated a more poised performance between the pipes for the last two games. Captain Qamar Mian has been a climactic force in the backend along with Kamran Siddiqui and will pursuit in stumping Haya's top agents. Will Yaqeen be able to take vengeance from Haya?

Player To Watch:
Mehmed Rizwanovic maybe a foreigner to I-Slam but not to ball hockey. The stalwart has been a quiet force and pocketed a significant amount points.

Who's Hot?
Furhan Azmat came out of the blue, scored two goals and was a instrumental tool in beating blue.

Burning Questions?
There was a lot of promise coming out of Aamir Haniff and Yaqoob Jamal, yet their silence has been unorthodox. Will these two make some noise this Friday?

Tier Two Previews - Week Six - October 24th

Haya vs Ikhlas
That sour taste of defeat has been finally sampled by the grey shirts. Haya teetered with Zuhd in a warfare of goals until it all came crashing down. The final nail in the coffin was pounded within the concluding 10 seconds of the game. A gut wrenching 7-6 loss will prove to be a learning experience for the Misty Marauders, after all, Haya's been exposed and must regroup and mask their blemishes versus Ikhlas. Adding to that, Yusuf Kapoor has gotta be better than that! Coach K's squad might as well absorb the loss now, rather than later and devise a plan where a last minute collapse is avertable. Does Haya's back end have the capacity to stand toe to toe against the Green Machine? Will the boys in grey be able to shrug off the defeat?

Ikhlas on the other hand had their backs to the wall and was overwhelmed for a bulk of the game by Yaqeen, well at least until the last 30 seconds to be precise. Enter GM Amir Multani. The nimble leader hit the twine and elevated his perplexed team to a 5-2 showering of the Winter Warriors. Things don't get easier from here on in for the green shirts. Their opposition will be a hellbent group of individuals and will be storming out of the flood gates. Conversely, it's up to Ikhlas on how they attempt to firm up their defence in response to Haya. There were some sweet giveaways that Yaqeen failed to capitalize on, cause quite honestly, Haya will just eat those alive. Will Ikhlas be able to maintain their win streak or have they met their match with grey's offensive firepower?

Player To Watch:
I'll pick two this time. Wakaas Khan and GM Amir Multani were on fire last week. Will they be able to ignite anymore flames this week versus Haya?

Who's Hot?
Waseem Bangash has proved his precedence and continues his rampage as reigns the league in points.

Burning Questions?
Can Ikhlas maintain their winning streak?

Shukr vs Yaqeen
Shukr endured their second loss of the season, and that at the hands of a bullheaded Ridha team. The loss makes things challenging for the lower part of the spectrum as Shukr, Ridha and Yaqeen battle to see the greener side of the fence. Stapled with a three game winless streak, Shukr now encounters Yaqeen for the second time this season. Their first and only win was a royal trumping of the white shirts where a 5-0 score was registered. The Blue Crew can't underestimate anyone and will anticipate to use the same cards that earned them that first win. Talib Contractor and Saqib Khokhar will be the go to guys and melt down Yaqeen with their speed. Can Shukr see another win?

Yaqeen's final minute breakdown really hurt, trust me, I know. The white shirts exerted everything in the gas tank and pushed Ikhlas to the limits. Unfortunately, Ikhlas's stubborn ways alleviated the Green Machine to a surging 5-2 win. Opportunities are running out for Yaqeen and sown thing must be done. Captain Qamar Mian and Abdul Aziz Rasoul have been at the front line for the white shirts but there's gotta be more firepower on this squad. Netminder Saboor Mian came out of the dark and played a strong game last week. What plan does GM Abbas Amarshi have this week? Yaqeen had a tough time with Shukr previously and must keep up with their pace. Can Yaqeen build some Yaqeen in themselves and avenge their loss to the blue shirts?

Player To Watch:
Waseem Kalair has been shutting down the opposition with his defensive expertise. Will he be able to tame Yaqeen's hungry forwards?

Who's Hot?
Despite the loss, goaltender Saboor Mian played a solid game last week. Is this the turn of a new leaf?

Burning Questions?
With both squads plummeting, which team will get the win?

Tier Two Previews - Week Five - October 17th

Zuhd vs Haya
After concluding to a scoreless draw, the Purple Platoons take their unbeaten-in-two streak against the hottest team in tier two, Haya. GM Fahad Malik and his feisty clan have high aspirations of cooling Haya's sizzling record and will entertain their chances by utilizing Naeem Akhtar and Huzaifa Manjara. Like I said last week, purple is gritty and more annoying than those candy crush invites you get, but their persistent forechecking has been their forte. Rizwan Ali seems cool and collected, Shabil Ahmed has also been a decent shareholder upfront; but do these guys possess the kahoonas in beating Haya? There's no doubt the purple's anatomy will give a Haya a run for their money! This will be a solid reality check for the purple shirts. Will Zuhd get the job done?

The guys on Haya are full of animation, and quite honestly, why shouldn't they be? A fortified three game win streak where they've clearly monopolized in every department. Last game Haya made a feast out of Ridha and it seems Khalid Bhatti's highlight reel goal was the talk of the town. "Khalid "Jaromir Jagr" Bhatti showed that he still has it with what could very well end up being the goal of the year," complimented teammate Waseem Bangash. The only issue that makes me cringe is if Haya can tame Zuhd's speed? Conversely, the Misty Marauders are full of finishers so it should be interesting to envision how Zuhd's defence will handle the grey shirt's offensive assailment. Can Coach K's clan extend their win streak to four?

Player To Watch:
Shabil Ahmed has been instrumental for the Purple Platoons and has already carved out a hearty 3 points.

Who's Hot?
Khalid Bhatti is the guy with the hot hands. Known for his "moving" goals, the timeless Bhatti refuses to age and continues his veteran prowess.

Burning Questions?
Is there anything yielding Haya's hot streak?

Ikhlas vs Yaqeen
Despite the looonnnngggg gap from their last game, the Green Machine look to snowball their winning streak to three games while the Winter Warriors anticipate to play spoilers. Ikhlas had a robust showing in their last game and proved that the green shirts are here for good. "A gritty team effort to come from behind and steal a win," were the sentiments from stud defenceman Wajahat Khan. Atif Mian, Azim Siddique and Wakaas Khan will initiate the deed and try to make life miserable for Yaqeen netminder Saboor Mian. How will Ikhlas reply to Yaqeen's speedy forwards? Will Zuhair Fancy and Farrukh Khan be enough of a barricade for Khalid Mufti? Who may I say is perched amongst the best goalies stats in tier two. GM Amir Multani's camp will need to exert to the fullest cause Yaqeen is still licking their chops in searching for their first win.

Yaqeen has been over many speed bumps and let's admit it, it hasn't been a joyous ride. However, last game's 6-3 loss to Haya displayed many positives that'll hopefully radiate into this Friday's tilt. Yaqeen was firing from all cylinders last game and outplayed the grey shirts in the second half. Unfortunately the deficit was to deep to excavate out of, hence retreating with another loss. Taqi Ahmad, Qamar Mian and Abdul Aziz Rasoul will have to step it up and put a wrench in Ikhlas's winning streak. Conversely, Saboor Mian has gotta be better than what he's broadcasted in the past. "We gotta block more shots," said GM Abbas Amarshi subsequent to Yaqeen's second loss. The Winter Warriors are locked with Ridha in last place and desperately need points to get into the playoff picture. When will the bleeding stop for the Yaqeen camp?

Player To Watch:
Despite the loss, Taqi Ahmed was on fire and got his team on the board by crafting 3 points.

Who's Hot?
Atif Mian has got two goals in his last game and has been a force for Ikhlas.

Burning Questions?
Will Yaqeen be able to resurrect themselves in the standings?

Shukr vs Ridha
The Blue Crew played a hearty game and definitely maintained their posture as Shukr settled in a scoreless draw versus Zuhd. "We knew we had to come out stronger and not let them do what they did to us last game," said GM Ahmad Ibrahim. Shukr's running game has paid dividends and has segregated themselves from the basement dwellers by a firm three points. It's somewhat valid to say that Shukr has a handcuff on the last playoff, but alternately if they preserve this performance then kismet is merely a blink away. Many of us have already forecasted that Shukr will ultimately lay down a "Hulk Smash" all over Ridha, cause you know, everyone's doing it. Will the blue shirts be able to realign to their winning ways?

"In need of massive improvement," spoke a disappointed GM Zaid Mahmood when asked about his team's 5-1 loss to Haya. Broken things need fixing but there're several facets of the Orangemen that need a full replacement. While the word "transactions" is obviously being tossed around the Ridha headquarters; there's questions to who's gonna go? Maybe orange will ride out another game so trading is strictly contingent on what transpires with Shukr this week. Netminder Sadiq Rehman can be beat, it's a matter of the Orangemen mustering out as many shots plausible. Nadeem Qureshi, Imran Lakhanpal and Farooq Sani will need to alleviate their game to the next level and get this team creeping up the standings very soon. Can Ridha pull off a win against Shukr?

Player To Watch:
Faheem Kotwal stills packs a punch and will need to lend his ambidextrous expertise to his squad.

Who's Hot?
Once again it's Mohamad Hamoud, or perhaps the only one who can churn out goals faster than a speeding ticket on Shukr.

Burning Questions?
Is Ridha the real deal?

Tier Two Previews - Week Four - October 10th

Haya vs Ridha
Two teams torpedoed in opposite directions clash once again as Haya faces off against the orange shirts. Coach "K" wasn't elated as his team got overwhelmed and almost permitted Yaqeen in mulling a comeback. Low and behold, the Misty Marauders prevailed to a commanding 6-3 and simply drove away into the night. Haya's Waseem Bangash and Aazar Zafar continue their blaze and it's assumed that the grey shirts will give the Ridha a thorough "Hockey 101" this week. Yusuf Kapoor's defence has managed to hold its own but at instances have displayed flashes of bemusement. Can Haya lengthen their win streak to three? Are the grey shirts the real deal?

The Orangemen must collaborate and execute a thorough plan in attempts of snatching two points. They have the tools, the heart and most importantly the hottest commodity on the squad, goaltender Yasir Hussain; so what's the story Rory? GM Zaid Mahmood might've received a shimmer of hope upon the welcoming of Nadeem Qureshi into the Ridha camp. Can this Kashmiri injection be enough of a stimulant for team orange? Defence has been lacking and quite often Yasir Hussain has been abandoned like an orphan at a shelter. Nevertheless, Ridha isn't out yet, and sometimes a new face can suddenly alter the fortunes for a team. Whose going to step and take this squad to the next level? Imran Lakhanpal? Farooq Sani? Anyone?

Player To Watch:
Known for his finesse on the back end, Nadeem Qureshi should give this team the boost they need.

Burning Questions?
Will Ridha be able to snap their losing streak?

Who's Hot?
As mentioned, Waseem Bangash and Aazar Zafar have been gold for Haya.

Zuhd vs Shukr
Who ticked off the sleeping bear? Man, talk about a butt kicking! Naeem Akhtar continues to attest that he's the one man show on the Purple Platoons. Akhtar easily devoted four points in a firm 6-1 thumping of Shukr and leads his crew in points. Collectively, all of purple orchestrated a gritty game, and that's what Zuhd's signature dish is all about...tenacity and hustle. Their probably a bunch of guys you wouldn't want meet in a dark alley, but man they getting it done. Can GM Fahad Malik's posse wreck havoc again this week? Chances are that history could repeat itself but you never what Shukr has in store? Netminder Rizwan Ali laughingly retorted 11 shots but easily had his egg cracked in the dying seconds. Here's your second chance Rizzy!

Call it a reality check or bad game, but sometimes you need your butt handed to you. Not only is it healthy for the team but it gives management a firm stance of their squad. Let's just hope Shukr doesn't make a habit of this treatment. It's plain and simple, the blue shirts have to come out harder and more targeted. Against Zuhd, Shukr's blue line mustn't play the chasing game and execute quicker decisions, cause Zuhd will bite you if they catch you "napping" with the ball. GM Ahmad Ibrahim must counter speed with speed and hope to catch Rizwan Ali napping on a few shots, cause once the floodgates open then...you know where I'm going. Can the blue shirts avenge their embarrassing loss?

Player To Watch:
Saqib Khokhar is a workhorse, hopefully his intensity will pay dividends this week.

Burning Questions?
Can Shukr come back with a reply to their loss?

Who's Hot?
You guessed it, Naeem Akhtar...self explanatory.

Tier Two Previews - Week Three - September 26th

Yaqeen vs Haya
Were those white shirts or white flags worn by Yaqeen last week? It was hard to hard to tell as they registered an abysmal performance in their season opener. The good news is that things should not get any worse. Look for GM Abbas Amarshi to plug the gaping holes on defense. Goaltender Saboor Mian will have to step things up if this game is to remain close. Likewise the offensive has to make an appearance. Captain Qamar Mian and 1st round pick Taqi Ahmed must lead this ship. The anticipated debut of Aamir Haniff will aid the team greatly but will it be enough?

Surprisingly this team looks better in person than it does on paper. Coach K’s troops came to play on both ends of the floor and it appears things just may stay that for the season. The A-Team (Aazar Zafar, Ali Murtaza, and Arif Khan) is expected to wreak havoc in the Yaqeen zone but expect league MVP Waseem Bangash to continue unleashing his booming shots. With only four natural defenseman two forwards will need to be dropped below the blue line. Will they hold their ground or be exposed by the speedy Yaqeen forwards?

Player to Watch:
A former Tier-1 player, Aamir Haniff can quickly change the tempo on either ends of floor. We haven’t seen him in a while and it will be interesting to see if he has shaken off any rust.

Burning Question:
Yusuf Kapoor was solid in net last week but can he put up a repeat performance?

Who’s Hot
Would you believe Khalid Bhatti? The ageless wonder continues to laugh in Father Time’s face. He registered two helpers last week and chances are there are more to come.

Zuhd vs Shukr
I love you. You love me…. Sorry, but that’s not Barney behind those purple shirts. This is a team of gritty and bruising players. Anyone that extends mercy to these men will have it slapped back in their face. Zuhd may have lost their opener but don’t think for a minute that it will remain this way. Fahad Mallik is expected to return and lead his team on the floor. The debut of the relentless Abdu Sharkawy should also bolster an offense that only generated 7 shots on net. The dominating presence of Naeem Akhter will also help neutralize a Shukr team that has no shortage of size. Rizwan Ali was solid between the pipes keeping his team alive and much of the same will be expected. Expect Huzaifah Manjra and Faisal Mehboob to wake up from their slumber and tear into the Shukr defense.

The GM trio of Firasath Ali, Ahmad "The Mountain" Ibrahim, and Mohammad Hamoud may have been the lowest ranked talented GM trio but yet again they have proven that they are geniuses at making teams. Shukr looked brilliant top to bottom in their shellacking of Yaqeen. Saqib Khokhar, Tariq Hathout, and Talib Contractor make up the core of speedy forwards that can leave the opposition defense with migraines. Waseem Kalair and Ozair Naveed were virtually impenetrable from the blue line and were key to Shukr’s transition game. Will they be good enough to keep Zuhd at bay? Expect Sadiq Rehman to put down the TV remote control. Unlike last week he won’t have any time to spectate in this game and will be required to be on full alert.

Player to Watch:
He may have banished himself from Tier-1 but the ball handling skills of  Fahad Mallik just can’t be ignored. He has the talent to go end to end or set up plays. His presence will be immediately felt on the floor.

Burning Question:
Just about every rookie on Shukr registered a point. Was this just beginner’s luck or is there be more to come from these newcomers?

Who’s Hot
None other than Captain Mohammad Hamoud. The gentle giant was on a tear last week. He registered three points and left two Yaqeen forwards squirming in pain on the floor. Expect him to dish out more pain.

Tier Two Previews - Week Two - September 19th

Shukr vs Yaqeen
Shukr always had the reputation of drafting wise and chasing pivotal players. In efforts of living up to that standard, Shukr prompted in employing Talib Contractor as their poster boy for the blue shirts. Smothered with many speedsters upfront, has the Blue Crew's back end been complimented coequally. Will Waseem Kalair and Samad Hamidi be able to prop Shukr's spine? GM Ahmad Ibrahim's roster will be very telling come Friday night so it's tough to get a gauge on what Yaqeen will be encountering. Emad Hussain and Saqib Khokhar will need to get their scoring caps on as the bulk of offensive production rests on their wings. Can goaltender Sadiq Rehman craft a win for his squad?

Yaqeen steps onto the arena floor for the first time this season and attempts to do diligence with Shukr. GM Abbas Amarshi fixated into carving a balanced team and selected Taqi Ahmed as Yaqeen's big point-getter. Captain Qamar Mian will try to lead the Winter Warriors to their first victory, but that'll be contingent on how Amarshi and his defensive core perform in front of netminder Saboor Mian. Yaqoob Jamal and Aamir Haniff will join the offensive wave and try to interrogate Sadiq Rehman to the maximum. Will the white shirts be able to contain Talib Contractor and Tariq Hathout? Shukr on paper does the appear like a powerhouse, but then again, don't we all?

Player To Watch:
Ambidextrous on the offence and defence, Mohamad Hamoud will be on Yaqeen's radar all night long.

Burning Questions?
Who will win their first game?

Who's Hot?
No one yet...

Ridha vs Ikhlas
The Orangemen were minus a few good men last match and dropped their first game in a 3-1 trouncing to Haya. Call it cold feet but the orange shirts appeared perplexed both on and off the floor. Hopefully management can resolve the nitty gritty on the squad cause up next for Ridha is Ikhlas. Any gambling man will take Ikhlas to win on this one, but like I always say, this is i-Slam and anything is possible. Ridha has gotta show up in every aspect, that's it! Lucky for them Imran Lakhanpal managed to crack the egg on Yusuf Kapoor's shutout and made the last week's result somewhat respectable. Netminder Yasir Hussain was pretty much left isolated last game and will need the shielding versus Ikhlas's high octane game.

The Green Machine came out on all cylinders last game and cranked out a hard working 3-2 win. The shots on net radiated on its own with Ikhlas pelting the opposition 17-7 in shots. Now this might be a cakewalk for the green shirts but unless green classically chokes then we got a night for Ridha to celebrate. There's no doubt that the Orangemen's vulnerabilities reside on defence, on top of that Ikhlas has been solid with pressuring down low. Defensively, Wajahat Khan, Zuhair Fancy and Farrukh Khan have been monstrous for the green shirts while Khalid Mufti proves time and time again why he reigns the best goalie for tier two. Will Ikhlas be able to stretch their on streak to two?

Player To Watch:
There's a substantial amount of pressure riding on Faheem Kotwal. Not a foreigner to the game, Faheem will need to provide some of his expertise in getting his squad back on track.

Burning Questions?
Which goalie will take home the bragging rights? Hussain or Mufti?

Who's Hot?
Where did this guy come from? Azim Siddique pulled off a stellar 3 point night for Ikhlas. Is there more where that came from?
